The event arrives without permission.

BAD LUCK.
GOOD LUCK.

Sometimes the Choice Is Yours.

A change can destroy the strategy that carried you for 12 years.

The same change can force you to build the strategy that carries you through the next 12.

You do not choose the bullet. You may still choose what happens after it hits.

Can One Event Be Good Luck and Bad Luck at the Same Time?

In our culture, the number 13 carries a reputation it did not earn through mathematics.

It is treated as if the number itself can deliver misfortune.

That makes thirteen a useful place to ask a harder question.

Is luck contained in the event?

Or does part of it emerge from what remains possible afterward?

Bad luckThe world changes against the system you built.
Good luckYou survive long enough to build a better one.

The Bullet That Almost Found Patrick

This is a family story.

Like many stories told long enough in Duplin County, North Carolina, it exists in several versions.

In one, the bullet bounced off and fell into Patrick’s lap.

In another, it passed through him and he was healed on the spot.

The version I came to believe is less miraculous and more instructive.

Patrick—known locally as Boy Scout—was driving home around dark thirty in an old 1967 Chevrolet.

A bullet fired from an AK-47 came through the windshield while he was traveling about 50 miles an hour.

It struck the metal frame where the windshield joined the body of the truck.

What remained of its force carried it into a notepad in Patrick’s front pocket.

It punctured the pad, broke his skin, and left a bruise.

According to the story, the sheriff later connected the shot to a nearby gathering involving a campfire, alcohol, and the discharge of the rifle.

Patrick appears to have been the only human consequence.

Being struck by a rifle bullet while driving home is unmistakably bad luck.

Being able to complain about the bruise afterward is another kind of luck entirely.

The point does not depend on which detail the years improved.

The point is that some bad luck leaves a person alive, aware, and able to move.

What Worked Before Can Become a Liability Now

For more than a decade, many businesses built revenue around traditional organic search.

They invested in rankings, links, blog inventories, domain authority, and long publishing calendars.

Some of those systems created durable value.

Some were built around tactics that search engines now classify as manipulation.

Google’s current spam policies identify link spam, keyword stuffing, and scaled content created primarily to manipulate rankings as violations.

A legacy practice can therefore stop helping, become neutralized, or create remediation work under a newer policy environment.

The business owner may be paying today for a search strategy purchased years ago.

The First Organic Position Can Carry Less Traffic Than It Once Did

The classic search page was organized around a list of links.

The modern search page can answer questions directly, display maps, products, videos, featured snippets, advertisements, AI summaries, and other modules before a visitor reaches a traditional result.

Pew Research Center analyzed 68,879 Google searches made by 900 consenting U.S. adults in March 2025.

When an AI summary appeared, participants clicked a traditional search result in 8 percent of visits.

When no AI summary appeared, they did so in 15 percent.

Only 1 percent of visits with an AI summary produced a click on a cited source within that summary.

Those findings do not prove that every site will lose the same proportion of traffic.

They do demonstrate that visibility on a search page no longer guarantees a visit to the publisher.

8%

15%

Organic Search Still Matters. Blind Reliance Matters More.

Google states that established SEO fundamentals remain relevant to its generative search features.

It continues to recommend original, useful, people-first content, accessible pages, accurate structured data, and strong page experience.

That is not the same as promising that yesterday’s traffic volume, ranking position, or return on content investment will continue.

Organic search remains capable of producing valuable demand.

What has become dangerous is treating it as a guaranteed utility instead of a changing market.

The strategic error is not using organic search. It is allowing organic search to become the only door into the business.

A Business in Distress Cannot Live on Eventual Visibility

Search recovery can require technical repair, content consolidation, link cleanup, recrawling, re-evaluation, and patience.

No ethical practitioner can guarantee the date or position of an organic recovery.

That timeline may be survivable for a well-capitalized organization.

It may be irrelevant to an owner who must make payroll, protect a home, or replace lost demand this month.

The immediate question is not how to recover the old ranking at any cost.

It is how to restore access to qualified customers while the long-term system is repaired.

PPC Can Restore Control Where the Economics Permit It

Paid search gives an operator direct control over geography, keyword intent, budget, landing environment, and the timing of a campaign.

For businesses with sufficient contribution margin, it can produce measurable demand while organic visibility is uncertain.

It can also become expensive, competitive, and wasteful.

A slow page, weak offer, or confused message can turn paid traffic into a faster method of losing money.

OrganicCompounding value, limited control, uncertain timing.
PaidImmediate testing, direct cost, measurable exposure.
OwnedEmail, customer data, brand demand, and relationships no platform can rank away.
ReferralPartners, reputation, communities, and direct human trust.

The new strategy is not “replace SEO with PPC.” It is “replace dependence with a portfolio of demand.”

The Work Is Moving From Ranking Pages to Establishing Evidence

Generative search does not erase the need for a technically sound and useful website.

It increases the importance of clear entities, original evidence, structured information, accessible content, identifiable authorship, and claims that can be verified.

Google’s official guidance says there is no hidden third-party metric or special shortcut that guarantees visibility in its AI systems.

The durable work remains familiar: create unique value, make it easy to access, explain it clearly, and measure whether the resulting visits produce commercial value.

The language may change from SEO to AEO, GEO, generative discovery, or something not yet named.

The operating principle does not.

Build information worth retrieving and a destination worth reaching.

Five Decisions After the Ranking Falls

  1. Measure the injury.Separate lost impressions, lost rankings, lower click-through, technical failure, conversion decline, and changes in demand. They are not the same problem.
  2. Audit the past.Identify manipulative links, thin or scaled content, duplication, technical debt, and strategies that no longer serve a human visitor.
  3. Protect immediate demand.Where unit economics support it, test paid acquisition through fast, focused landing environments while long-term repairs continue.
  4. Diversify the doors.Develop owned audiences, partnerships, referrals, direct brand demand, video, local presence, and generative-search visibility.
  5. Build for the present.Retire the belief that historical success grants permanent protection from a changing platform.

The Future Is Still Available to the People Who Move

The bullet has already entered the windshield.

Rankings have fallen.

Traffic has changed.

Old advice has become expensive.

Generative systems are changing how information is discovered before most companies understand how to measure the transition.

That is bad luck.

But the business is still here.

Its knowledge, customers, reputation, products, people, and ability to choose have not necessarily disappeared with the ranking.

That is the luck it can recover from.

You cannot command the past to start working again.

You can stop letting it decide what happens next.
